Lately there has been a move to unlock the iPhone 5 via carrier unlocks to enable the fastest LTE/4G available. Both ATT and TMobile were already unlocked in the last month but yesterday brought us a hack for the other carrier still not running unlocked, Verizon.
This is a hack that is easy to do and easy to test but is it really worth it? You can grab the Speedtest.net iOS app to perform before and after speed tests.
In a world of super fast Wifi and limited needs to actually use LTE/4G, is it needed? The extra speed bump this hack promises may be worth it if you are on the Subway or Train a lot and get the LTE/4G coverage you want, but want it faster!
I would argue not, but I am sure that I am the minority with Wifi almost everywhere I go.
For those of you out there that speak a bit of “geek” here are the tech notes:
This hack enables 1x Advanced and EVDO Rev. B on the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, 4, and mini as well as enhancing LTE data speeds. Though Verizon is limited to EVDO Rev. A, the device itself becomes more open to an increased amount of bandwidth thus allowing for better throughput of data and data connection.
As always you want to be careful fooling around with any carrier updates, the good thing about this hack is you can always revert back if you see any downsides or ill effects on your iDevice.
